Prefectural Advisors for the JET Program in Japan

Prefectural Advisor (PA) is a critical role within the JET Program in Japan, designed to provide essential support and guidance to JET participants (ALTs and CIRs) in their respective prefectures. This role is primarily filled by a Japanese staff member in the Guidance Division, as well as by CIRs (Coordinators for International Relations) who take on this responsibility as a secondary, yet highly significant, part of their duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Support and Guidance:
    • Primary Role: Prefectural Advisors are the first point of contact for JET participants needing assistance with work-related issues, personal concerns, and general advice about living in Japan. They provide ongoing support to ensure the well-being and success of JET participants.
    • Secondary Role for CIRs: Although secondary in title, CIRs’ function as Prefectural Advisors is primary in impact. They offer linguistic and cultural support, bridging the gap between Japanese staff and JET participants. Their international perspective and language skills make them invaluable in resolving various issues.
  2. Liaison Duties:
    • Prefectural Advisors act as intermediaries between JET participants, schools, and the Board of Education. They help facilitate communication and ensure that any concerns or problems are addressed promptly and effectively.
  3. Orientation and Training:
    • Prefectural Advisors are instrumental in organizing orientation sessions and ongoing training programs for JET participants. They provide essential information about teaching methods, cultural etiquette, and daily life in Japan.
  4. Crisis Management:
    • In times of emergency or crisis, Prefectural Advisors provide critical support and guidance. They are trained to handle various situations, from natural disasters to personal emergencies, ensuring that JET participants receive the help they need.
  5. Resource Provision:
    • They supply necessary resources, such as teaching materials, cultural guides, and administrative forms. They also assist in navigating Japanese bureaucracy, helping JET participants with paperwork and official documents.

Why They Matter:

Prefectural Advisors are essential to the smooth operation of the JET Program. They ensure that JET participants feel supported, valued, and integrated into their local communities. The role they play, particularly by CIRs in this capacity, is fundamental to fostering a positive and productive experience for everyone involved. We love you all <3.
