Easter Egg Lesson

Objective
Easter Cultural Lesson

A fun lesson where the students get to decorate their very own egg for easter!

Materials needed:

  • one hard boiled egg per student
  • coloured crayons, enough for 2 per student
  • food dye (red, yellow and blue)
  • vinegar
  • water
  • plastic cups (tall, skinny ones are better)
  • spoons
  • newspaper to put down on the desk
  • paper towel/tissue for any mess

This lesson takes some planning and money from the English department to buy the eggs but if you can do it the kids will love it! My school is only small so I was lucky that I could do it with all grades; you may only be able to do one or two grades depending on your school size.

This lessons takes a full 50 minutes.

The dyes need to be prepared before the lesson starts, but they can be used for follow-on classes! The recipe for the dye is: water + a dash of vinegar (this helps the dye adhere to the egg) + whatever colour dye you want (you only need a little to make it a strong colour!) I prepared 16 cups of dye before class (this covered enough for half the class dyeing at the same time), 4 each of red, yellow, blue and green.

First, explain to the students about Easter, its meaning and some of the symbols of easter (eggs, chicks, rabbits, hot cross buns etc.) This needs to be kept really short! (See Attachment 'Easter Information and History.')

Then, onto the fun stuff! Each student gets their egg and 2 crayons and has 5-10 minutes to draw whatever they like on it.

Once they are done, they take their egg to the back of the classroom where the dye is, pick one colour, take it back to their desk with a spoon and a sheet of newspaper to put underneath, and proceed to dip their egg into the dye. The egg needs to remain in the dye for around 3-5 minutes. (This whole process relies on the assumption that some students will take a lot longer than others to complete the crayon part of the process and so you will not need to have a colour dye cup for each student. So, by the time one student finishes with the dye another will be ready to use it. Worst case scenario, 2 eggs can go in the same cup! It just takes some coordination for this to work!) At the end of the class I took a photo of each student with their egg (and for the next lesson made photo cards for them as a keepsake.) The students could then eat the egg if they were finished, or could take it home.

Also, for those students who are really fast, have some word puzzles ready to go to keep them occupied.

Notes

It is very helpful to have several teachers in the room with you to help control the students and look after the dyes. I was lucky enough to have 3 other teachers with me. Also, beware students who are allergic to egg!!!! This is obviously a bad activity for them, so check beforehand! Finally, you'll be surprised how fast this lesson goes so keep checking the time!
