What's this? (Animals)
Introduce the new animals.
Introduce the phrase “What’s this?” and “It’s a/an ~ .”
Demonstrate. Cover one animal card, ask ‘what’s this?’, and then make the appropriate animal noise. Allow for an answer. Do this for all the animal cards.
- Put the students into groups. Each group gets a set of animal cards.
- One student repeats what the ALT/OTE demonstrated. The first student in the small group to answer correctly is the winner. The winner gets to be in charge of the next card.
- Repeat this for as long as you feel necessary. ALT and OTE should be observing the students as they play the game in their small groups.
Using the animal noises highlights the differences between Japanese and Western culture. To extend the activity a little, you can play the game using the Japanese animal noises too, or get the students to teach them to the ALT.
